THE RELATIONSHIP OF RECOGNITION AND PROACTIVTY

19 December 2022

Over the weekend, I contributed a piece on “Recognition” and related that story, essentially, to what I perceive to be an ongoing failing in the Solomon Islands to recognition being given to youths, both individuals and in youth groups that are continually doing good work within the communities to foster unity and the need for national unity in particular.

I also touched upon the seemingly lack of recognition given to the work of our doctors and nurses at the National Referral Hospital (NRH) battling an ever increasing number of patients suffering from preventable diseases if only more attention was publically given to NCDs by the MHMS and the government.

What I didn’t mention was proactivity in the sense of taking initiatives, but in the reference I made to youths and youth groups, I have personal knowledge of their proactivity for the good of the nation, so didn’t touch on proactivity on their part.

In other aspects of work output in the Solomon Islands and, yes, even at the NRH, is it perhaps a fact that many workers are simply on “Autopilot” mode, trying to complete their daily to do list and repeating the same cycle of routine every day?

Without some appreciation or recognition, as I previously touched upon, have we lost sight of being proactive with fresh ideas, new initiatives and working better?

After the Covid pandemic we are now in a world of changed circumstances and an ever changing landscape in work practices, in health care, in communications, in travel and the moment we stop to improve, we could be left behind, obsolete and face more hardships impacting our lives, the national economy and even the ongoing viability of the government we have today.

To stay relevant, I really believe all must work harder, grasp opportunities to learn new skill sets, become more pro-active and resourceful, and a good deal of that motivation could come from recognition from with an organization’s work place, and even by the SIG taking the lead.

 Yours sincerely
