“Teeth needed” for the SI Anti-Corruption Commission, says the Chair of the Commission

An article published in today’s Solomon Star newspaper written by paper’s Editor, Mr. Alfred Sasako, said a nation’s senior statesman, Sir Frank,Ofagioro Kabui, GCMG, CSI, OBE, and former Governor-General of the Solomon Islands, has called for an urgent review of the countries Anti-Corruption Act, 2018.

Quoting the article in read:

SIR Frank Ofagioro Kabui – a former Attorney General and High Court Judge and one of the nation’s senior statesmen – is calling for an urgent review of the nation’s Anti-Corruption Act 2018.

At the same time, Sir Frank, a former Governor General said the government needs to take a good hard look at its recruitment policy, which puts a lot of emphasis on engaging PhD graduates into the workforce.

Sir Frank is the Chair of the newly created Anti-Corruption Commission.

In an exclusive interview with Solomon Star yesterday, Sir Frank said the Act needs to be reviewed immediately to give “teeth” to the Anti-corruption body.

“At the present time we do not have that power so I am trying to get the Act reviewed because it lacked technical and depth of knowledge. As such, it needs to be reviewed.

“I have actually spoken to the Office of the Prime Minister which was responsible for its initial drafting instruction as well as tabling it and passing it in Parliament. I am waiting for a response,” Sir Frank said yesterday.

Meanwhile, Sir Frank has hit out at what he sees as putting too much emphasis on the recruitment of PhD graduates

“There’s a lot of emphasis on recruiting PhD graduates to a point where the Government actually glorifies them. PhD graduates will not necessarily produce the outcome the government is looking for because they lack experience.

“Yes, they have the theoretical aspect, but theory and experience are two different things altogether,” Sir Frank said.

“In many instances you will be shocked to find the opposite of what the government expects is true. PhD is a good tool to work with, but it depends on who uses it,” he said.

According to Sir Frank the emphasis on PhD graduates has caused the government to put “wrong people in the wrong places.”

“This could be one of the reasons why things are not moving in government because of lack of experience.”

Sir Frank also said individuals should not be afraid to speak out on issues of national importance when they see something is not right.

End of quote.

Yours sincerely
