The Solomon Islands in in shock and grief over the alleged rape and killing of an innocent seven year old girl in Kolombangara, Western Province.
Prime Minister Sogavare said the incident was heartbreaking and strongly urged relevant authorities to work together to ensure the perpetrators face the full force of the law.
I believe the Hon. Prime Minister in his words reported in today’s Solomon Times Online spoke for the nation and I will quote his moving comments,
“The girl, according to Police was on her way home from school when she met her fate.
“It was very painful to hear the news of the alleged killing of this innocent soul. I am lost for words. This is heartbreaking indeed and I extend my prayers and deepest condolences to the family, school mates and relatives of this innocent soul.
“I appeal to those who may know any information on this incident to assist the Police in their investigation,”
As a responsible and concerned Leader, I and my Government condemns heinous and brutal crimes, especially, against innocent children and other vulnerable members of our population.
“This is a heinous crime given the age of the victim, who is a member of the most vulnerable group of our society,”
“As a society we must protect our children because they need our protection and security.”
Investigation into this matter is continuing, but it is belived two male persons have been questioned by the police over the alleged crimes.
Yours sincerely
