SLOW DOWN IN COVID TRANSMISSIONS LIKELY ATTRIBUTED TO HEALTH SAFETY MEASURES

10 March 2022

Members of the public who have constantly practiced healthy safe measures against covid-19 have been applauded for their contribution towards the decline in covid cases in Honiara city and some parts of the country.

Most recent data had indicated a declining trend in positive cases, which shows a slowdown in community transmission mostly in Honiara city and some Provincial centers.

Health and Medical Services Minister, Dr. Culwick Togamana said the slowdown in covid cases could be attributed to public behavior in adhering to health safety measures such as constant wearing of face masks in public places, social distancing at large gatherings and constant handwashing and sanitizing.

“I thank many of you who have continuously remained vigilant and stead-fast in upholding the COVID-19 health key messages. Thank you indeed for your cooperation. You may not realize, but your actions are contributing significantly to current efforts to preserve the health and lives of our people,” Togamana said.

The Minister repeated his call for cooperation and solidarity in the ongoing fight against the disease, which, is generating lots of difficulties to families and communities.

“If there is anything that is needed from all of us at this time, it is our solidarity, unity and cooperation. Abiding to all COVID-19 public safe measures, health instructions and advises is how we can achieve this. Let’s do the right thing for the protection of our country,” the Minister urged.

The Minister also condemned reports of some people neglecting public safety rules which are imposed at entry points to manage travelers to and from provinces.

“I have received reports of people arriving in Honiara and without waiting for their test results, have started boarding taxis to travel home. Our workers had to chase them to wait for their test results. This is unacceptable and must stop,” Togamana said.

Clearance mechanisms are in place for travelers to and from provinces to ensure travelers strictly abide to these measures to mitigate further spread of the virus amongst communities.
