The Government, through the Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development (MEHRD), will soon complete a nationwide school infrastructure project valued at $100 million.
The project, which com
prised of new classroom buildings and the renovation of existing ones, was implemented in 2015 and 2016 is expected to be completed by June 30 before being handed over to each respective school.
In 2015 and 2016, the MEHRD approved funding for the construction of specialized classrooms and the renovation of existing classroom buildings for 31 secondary schools throughout Solomon Islands.
The Specialized Classroom Project comprises 31 classroom buildings which are new Science Laboratories, Home Economics and Technology Classrooms.
Besides the Specialized Classroom Building Project, MEHRD also funded two dormitories and two ablution blocks at Aligegeo Secondary School, the renovation of Halisi Primary School, the Garanga Senior Secondary School, Red Cross School renovations and King George VI School staff housing construction and� the Temotu Tsunami and Earthquake classroom construction of 14 double Classrooms and 15 Staff Houses, 20 new School Library buildings and flood damaged remediation projects in Honiara and Guadalcanal.
Additionally, MEHRD also provided financial and technical support to Education Authorities and schools for 52 schools across Solomon Islands.
These Infrastructure projects were tendered and awarded to private contractors, providing a huge boost in local employment.
Funding for the projects was sourced from national coffers, the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), and the New Zealand Government through its Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT).
These huge infrastructure projects were implemented to meet the urgent need to build better and more classroom buildings to meet the high demand for school infrastructure throughout Solomon Islands.
MEHRD is committed to continue improving school infrastructure, promoting and enhancing learning for our children.
MEHRD is also looking at ensuring these classrooms are well resourced with equipment and facilities and is developing a strategy to help Schools and Education Authorities maintain and look after these valuable assets."
