I would like to share with the MHMS and diabetes sufferers in the Solomon Islands some selected aspects of published information on how better eating can help manage diabetes and reduce the need for prescription medication.
Food is a central part of being healthy
Diabetes disease can be managed and controlled at least partly through changes in lifestyle and meals should have less sugar, carbohydrates, fat and salt.
A traditional diet with fish and a variety of vegetables is best, cutting out imported food stuffs containing too much fat.
Cut out all sweet drinks and drink plenty of water daily.
Guidelines and willingness to change lifestyles
I read last week that the MHMS started to give attention to the kind of food to be eaten to reduce NCDs and I welcome such a move, but suggest the MHMS give more attention to NCDs by issuing guidelines to all sections of the community, including schools and colleges of education on tailoring meals for specific medical conditions, including the prevention of diabetes to meet standards of nutrition, and food quality, nutrition counselling and health education data.
Emphasis must also be given by the MHMS to the general public on the need for lifestyle changes, including the need for exercise, cutting out smoking and drinking much less alcohol.
