GUADACANAL PLANS FOR A NEW PRESENCE IN THE CENTRE OF THE CITY
During the two years I was present in Honiara (July 1997 to July 1999) the then Premier of Guadalcanal Province was accommodated in a small office in an old building in the centre of the city that had once functioned during the colonial era as the District Commissioner’s Office.
In the same building the police had a tiny room which served as the office of the Provincial Police Commander for Guadalcanal Province.
I was pleased to read recently thatthe government plans to construct a new building that will represent Guadalcanal province right in the center of the city.
The Rita Eleven building where the current provincial office is located was gifted to the provincial government by the national government, led by Prime Minister Sogavare.
Since taking office in 2019, the Guadalcanal executive government led by Premier Sade has continued to pursue the issue of land in the province.
It will be recalled that Guadalcanal will establish its headquarters at Mamara, west of Honiara, and build three other townships around the province.
Premier Francis Sade announced this during the province’s 37th Second Appointed Day celebration at Marau,
Premier Sade said the township project was the government top priority project policy.
“It has been a dream of many people to have a town that hosts a provincial headquarter,” he said.
“This government is committed to making this a reality with the support of the national government, and has now established a township project office with qualified officers manning it,” Premier Sade added.
Yours sincerely
