Getting the facts right
The spreading of false information, false rumours and deliberate false news remains a painful memory, and a set-back to security, of the two years preceding the time now referred to as the time of the “Tensions” in the Solomon Islands.
MASI in the Solomon Islands is doing good work in seeking to impose and adhere to professional standards of truthful and honest journalism but individuals seem set to spread gossip with no basis of truth.
I can say how national security and unity was impeded by similar tactics in 1999 and similar tactics seem to be emerging today.
Information should be checked, verified and, ideally, re-checked before being put in print.
Yours sincerely
