Logging machines burnt down in dispute

Quoting the Solomon Star newspaper – 6 December 2018

“FIVE logging machines have been burnt down at Ono logging camp in East Are’Are, Malaita Province.

“The machines included three bulldozers and two excavators.

According to a concern village elder of Naorea village who declined to be identified said the incident occurred yesterday and the cost of damages run into thousands of dollars.

“The suspects have claimed to be the landowners of the site where Samlinsan logging company is currently operating.

“The villager added the incident came as a result following an argument between the landowners and the logging company over the operation on their land.

“The village elder stated the real landowners were disappointed because some non-landowners have been signing logging documents to allow the operation to take place.

“The Village elder said that there are many logging companies operating within East Are’Are that caused more arguments and dispute between tribes and individuals.

“He urges all the licencies to properly deal with the logging companies first before operating in their respective lands.

“The village elder also urges the Government and the Ministry of Forestry to make the right decision to fight against corruption in the country.”
