Solomon Airlines Commercial Manager, Colling Sigamanu told the media in a press conference on Tuesday this week that the local “Iumi Tugeda” tourism initiative is gaining momentum with about 79 people having traveled under the holiday package scheme to several of the countries holiday destinations at cut rates.
Mr.Sigamanu also said future bookings were looking good as every weekend people are taking advantage of traveling out on the packages.
Some 38 operators around the country participate in the holiday package initiative and huge discounts have made domestic travel holidays very attractive.
In the absence of international tourists coming in domestic travel was especially promoted as an avenue to attract local tourists, so they could appreciate other parts of the country international visitors often enjoyed visiting.
The Government through the Ministry of Culture and Tourism is trying to keep the ailing tourism industry in the country afloat following travel restrictions by COVID-19.
