Solomons crackdown on illegal foreign businesses

“The ministry is focusing on foreigners operating micro businesses such as canteens and food stalls which are supposed to be reserved for locals.
“The Solomon Islands Chamber of Commerce has applauded the move saying it regularly receives complaints from its members on the issue.
“Its chief executive, Dennis Meone, said whilst the chamber supported and encouraged foreign investment it was imperative foreigners abided by the law.
“Mr Meone also welcomed the creation of a new Business Monitoring Joint Agency Committee made up of relevant government agencies and other partners.
“He said the committee would help bring transparency and accountability to doing business in Solomon Islands and provide a platform for inclusive engagement with stakeholders.
“Ministry staff needed more support and resources, however, to enable them to carry out their work effectively, Mr Meone said.
"Building internal capacity will go a long way in ensuring internal regulatory systems are robust, credible and implemented."
