It has been made known to me in (in a yet to be confirmed statement) that a local authority in Honiara has requisitioned a new mammogram machine to be given to the National Referral Hospital’s Cancer Unit.
If the report is factual, which I believe it is, then I would like to thank the Board and management of the operation for seeing the value of a mammogram for the NRH’s Cancer Unit and its use in ensuring the mammogram can be put to use in screening women for early signs of breast cancer.

Breast cancer claims the lives of many women in the Solomon Islands and detecting early signs of breast cancer can help to prevent premature deaths of women and ensure a treatment programme is made available for them.

Comment
Screening programmes for cervical cancer in women and prostate cancer in men, plus screening programmes for other kinds of diseases must become a regular part of medical services available to all in the Solomon Islands and government provisioning should ensure this.
Yours sincerely
