Opposition group calls on Gov’t to counter PEC’s decision
Quoting the Island Sun newspaper – 2 May 2019
“The Grand Coalition group calls on the Government to review the powers vested on the Parliamentary Entitlements Commission (PEC) through a constitutional amendment.
“This call came after it was announced that the PEC has recently increased the salaries of Members of Parliament.
“Following its announcement, the public took to social media and the public arena questioning politicians over it.
“Speaking out on this, the official Opposition group noted that they do understand and sympathise with the call by the public deploring the approval of the increase.
“The group stated that it is unfortunate the announcement came ahead of the ongoing reviews to the schemes of service under various departments and government institutions, including the ongoing review of our tax system.
“In this time when our economy is in crisis, these matters need to be considered in light of other matters of national interest. The announcement certainly is untimely and does not serve the national interest.”
